I'm Ray Belli, the creator and host of Words for Granted.
Back in 2010, someone left an art history book on my bathroom windowsill. (True story.) One day as I was flipping through it, I came across a painting of Christ's crucifixion. I don't remember what it was called, but it had passio in the title. According to the corresponding footnote, passio was the Latin word for "suffering," and it was the root of our modern word "passion."
The connection between "suffering" and "passion" set off an enormous lightbulb above my head. I became obsessed with learning where words come from and how meanings change over time.
Six years and several textbooks later, I turned this obsession into a podcast.
